Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists help to manage and prevent a number of physical problems. These problems my have been caused by illness, disease, sport or work related injury, aging and long periods of inactivity (Canadian Physiotherapy Association, 2008). Physiotherapists are skilled in the assessment and management of a broad range of conditions that affect musculoskeletal, circulatory, respiratory and nervous systems. (Canadian Physiotherapy Association).

PHYSIOTHERAPY

Physiotherapist (PT)

The physiotherapist has a number of roles in the process of rehabilitation which include:

  • performing neuromuscular assessments related to patient function and potential for recovery
  • Performing initial assessments regarding mobility aids, assistance required and patient safety during ambulation, stairs and functional skills.
  • Provide gait and balance training
  • Initiate and monitor exercise programs to be carried out by patient
  • Prescribe and utilize electrotherapeutic modalities as required
  • Assign patients to physiotherapy aide as required (?)


Physiotherapy Aide

 

  • assists the physiotherapist with patients requiring two people to assist with mobility
  • follows through with patients who require one person to mobilize if deemed appropriate by the physiotherapist
  • follow through with exercise programs assigned by the physiotherapist
  • utilize electro therapeutic modalities as delegated by physiotherapist


Referrals for outpatient physiotherapy:

  • from orthopedic surgeons: post immobilization, post- surgical, pre- surgical orthopedic conditions
  • Post- CVA (stroke): immediately after discharge, or discharge from NECCAC services
  • Post- amputation: immediately after hospital discharge, discharge from NECCAC services or after amputee clinic for pre prosthetic or prosthetic training
  • SAH staff with work- related injuries



Outpatient physiotherapy services are provided to patients/clients with referrals from orthopedic surgeons, to those who have been discharged from the hospital or NECCAC services, post- CVA (stroke) and/or post- amputation. Services may also be provided to SAH staff with work related injuries.

Amputee Clinic
The Amputee Clinic at Sault Area Hospital includes a prosthetist, an orthopedic surgeon and a physiotherapist. The purpose of the clinic is to determine if a patient qualifies for lower extremity prosthesis. If a prosthesis is deemed to be required, the prosthetic prescription is also done
