Matthews Memorial Hospital

Matthews Memorial Hospital (MMH) is located on St. Joseph Island at the junction of the St Mary’s River, Lake Superior and Lake Huron. MMH has been operating as a satellite facility of SAH since 1984.
Two family physicians provide service to the hospital while managing their office practices. MMH provides 24-hour emergency and outpatient service to the residents of St Joseph Island and the surrounding Algoma District between Bruce Mines and Echo Bay. Outpatient treatments include chemotherapy, blood transfusions and blood product administration, IV antibiotics, low molecular weight heparin and booked minor surgical procedures. Services include x-ray, laboratory, and medical treatment.
Matthews Memorial Hospital is committed to providing a continuum of care across the community spectrum through innovative partnerships and linkages. The Matthews Memorial Hospital Association (MMHA) is a major partner in improving health services and meeting the health care needs of the residents in the area.
Thessalon Hospital

The Town of Thessalon is located on the North Shore of Lake Huron on Highway 17and is known as the Gem of Algoma. Thessalon Hospital serves a population of approximately 9,000 from the Algoma District and operates as a satellite facility of SAH. The client population lives in Thessalon and the surrounding area from Iron Bridge to Desbarats.
This small community hospital provides 24-hour emergency service as well as maintaining two short-term observation beds and four acute care inpatient medical beds. It is co-located with Algoma Manor, a 108-bed nursing home.
Thessalon Hospital handles approximately 5,000 Emergency visits annually. Outpatient and inpatient services include lab, x-ray and ECG diagnostics, active medical treatment, minor surgical procedures and supportive and palliative care.
The team consists of physicians, registered nurses, registered practical nurses, housekeeping, maintenance and clerical staff. The Hospital Auxiliary provides excellent support and services to patients, as does the Huron Shores Association.
Algoma Manor and Thessalon Hospital work in partnership, resulting in significant benefits for the elderly. The staffs work closely together and share equipment. Physicians on site at the hospital visit the Manor residents to provide ongoing medical care. The hospital provides emergency diagnostics and medical care for nursing home patients, precluding the need for ambulance transport.
